SHOWMANSHIP AT HALTER

May be English or Western. Listed below are points on which you will be judged. Only the exhibitor is judged. The horse is merely a prop to show the ability of the exhibitor. Showmanship at halter shall be a separate class from all other halter classes. This performance class shall be judged strictly on the contestant’s ability to fit and show in a halter class.

APPEARANCE OF THE HORSE:

Condition and thriftiness evident

Hair coat clean and well brushed

Mane, tail, fore-top and wither tufts free of tangles and clean. Braids are permitted.

Hooves trimmed properly. If shod, shoes must fit and clinches should be neat. Polish is permitted.

Manes may be roached, but fore-top must be left.

Inside of ears may be clipped.

Long hair on the jaw, legs and pasterns should be clipped.

Tack should be neat, clean, and in good repair. Flashy or silver will not count more than clean and neat.

SHOWING HORSE IN THE RING:

LEADING:

1. Enter the ring leading the horse at an alert walk. Walk on the horse's left side, holding the lead shank in your right hand near the halter. The remaining portion of the shank should be held neatly in your left hand. Horse should lead readily at the walk or the trot.

2. After the judge has lined up the class, he/she will call each exhibitor to more his/her horse individually. When you move your horse, be sure the judge can see your horse clearly.

POSING:

When posing your horse, stand toward the front (but not directly in front) of your horse, facing the horse. Always be in a position where you can keep your eye on the Judge and your horse.

Never kick a horse's leg into position.

Do not crowd the exhibitor next to you.

Be natural. Over-showing and undue fussing and maneuvering are objectionable.
